from your Kemp Road Retreat
Seasonal events and performances: see what's happening during your stay →We're so glad you're here. This is our own guide to the area around the Kemp Road Retreat: the restaurants we actually go to, the local spots we love, and the places we'd tell a friend they have to see.
Swainsboro is a small Southern town, but there's a lot to discover close by. Within an hour or so you'll find ancient sand dunes along a blackwater river, an 1880 mill and cypress millpond you can paddle, Civil War history, old-growth longleaf pine forest, farms where you can pick your own berries, and festivals that have been running since 1946. Much of it is outdoors, and much of it is free.
We hope you love exploring this corner of Georgia as much as we do.

Why we made this guide
We fell in love with this corner of Georgia: the blackwater rivers and longleaf pines, the small towns with long memories, and the people who still wave from their porches. The Kemp Road Retreat is our invitation to share it.
We want the house to be a place where you can truly rest: quiet mornings, long evenings, no hurry. But we also hope you won't stay tucked away the whole time. There's real beauty just down the road, a culture you won't find anywhere else, and local families pouring their hearts into the restaurants, farms and shops in this guide. Every meal at a hometown restaurant and every jar of local honey helps keep that community going.
A lifetime of service and a love of learning have taught us that the best part of any place is its people and its stories. That's why nearly every spot in this guide comes with a little history, from how an 1880 gristmill worked to how ancient sand dunes ended up miles from the ocean. Look for the "Stories" under each place.
So rest up, then go explore. Paddle a millpond, walk the dunes, catch a Saturday night race, sit down for a plate of barbecue, and say hello. We hope you leave feeling connected to the land and the people here, and that you'll want to come back.
